Strengthening the vitality of our communities is important not only to the communities where we operate, but also to the employees in those communities and to the ongoing success of the company. We focus our corporate resources on programs and agencies that
-
promote lifelong learning through education,
-
work collaboratively to deliver health and human services
-
foster innovative ways to build a strong community
In 2011, we donated $1.7 million to more than 100 local non-profits in the US, China, India, Brazil and Australia. In addition, we provided $800,000 in scholarship assistance to children of Timken employees across the world and more than $500,000 to support technical research and university programs.
- In Jamshedpur, India, we sponsored a local cultural show for a local NGO supporting underprivileged children.
- In Wuxi, China, we made a donation to Roots and Shoots’ “Million Tree Program” to offset our carbon footprint from participating in local business conferences.
- In Canton, Ohio, we made a donation to the Ohio and Erie Canalway Coalition to support the ongoing development of the Ohio and Erie Towpath trail.
- We donated to the annual fund of the South Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities Foundation to support scholarships for students attending those colleges.
- In Houston, Texas, we made a grant to support a local caring community YMCA program.
- We supported numerous food programs including the regional Foodbank, the local food pantry and backpack programs that provide low-income children with food to take home for the weekend.
- We donated to numerous afterschool programs including the Boys and Girls Clubs and Upward Bound.
In 2011, we also supported programs that leveraged the company resources with the time and talent of our employees to impact our local communities. More than 70 percent of our top 150 leaders are active community leaders, serving on local non-profit and NGO boards. We have actively promoted this as a leadership competency for our management team, serving as role models for the community and other Timken associates.
