Bow to Stern, Timken Helps Power Workboats

Building on its engineered bearings leadership, Timken expanded its portfolio and technical problem-solving abilities over the last decade through strategic acquisition of brands like Philadelphia Gear, PT Tech, Torsion Control and Lovejoy.

Today the company’s broad offering of adjacent power transmission products more fully serves global customers’ industrial motion needs. In marine, it means Timken is a single source that can address a myriad of technical challenges — taking significant time out of what’s typically a very long ship design process.

Jason Rebucci, president of PT Tech and Torsion Control Products, two Timken brands that support the marine industry through Timken Engineered Marine Solutions, says the linchpin of Timken’s integrated marine portfolio is PT Tech® clutches, which engage and disengage power transmission from driving to driven shafts in any workboat system.

“On the input side of clutches, you need couplings,” says Rebucci. “On the output side, you might need chain, belts, gear drives and bearings. We are experts in all these areas, and collectively, we use our engineering and manufacturing knowledge to translate a boat designer’s vision into reality — helping them navigate marine agency product design approvals and reducing the design cycle by weeks or even months.”

The company’s complete portfolio is driven by nine engineering-focused brands that can improve performance across 16 different systems throughout the average workboat.

In other marine niches, Timken engineers collaborate with motor manufacturers to integrate brakes into motors that can be used as lifting devices. They also work with top suppliers of azimuth thrusters — rotating propeller systems that gives ships a high degree of maneuverability without the need of a rudder.

Finally, Timken is leveraging expertise in both marine and food and beverage processing to improve uptime on seafood processing ships. Timken^® housed units improve reliability and protect against corrosion whether food is processed on land or at sea.
