Purchasing Specifications for Hazardous Chemicals

CONTROLLED SUBSTANCES

The Timken Company will NOT purchase products that contain the following substances. This restriction
does not apply to chemicals purchased for laboratory use in laboratory scale quantities. No other
exceptions will be made unless authorized by the Company’s Corporate Environmental Health and Safety
Department.

1.0 ASBESTOS – Including, but not limited to, insulating materials, gasket materials, brake linings
and clutch plates. Common names include actinolite, amosite, anthophyllite, chrysotile, crocidolite,
and tremolite.

2.0 CADMIUM – Including, but not limited to, brazing, soldering and welding materials. (CAS #
include but not limited to 7440-43-9,10108-64-2, 1306-19-0, 10124-36-4, 1306-23-6)

3.0 CHLORINATED HYDROCARBONS IDENTIFIED AS CARCINOGENIC – These
substances are generally found in solvents, cleaners, lubricants, cutting oils and paint products.

  • 3.1 Perchloroethylene (PERC, tetrachloroethane 1,1,2,2- tetrachloroethylene), CAS # 127-18-4
  • 3.2 Trichloroethylene (TCE, ethylene trichloride, trichloroethene, trilene), CAS #79-01-6
  • 3.3 Methylene chloride (dichloromethane, methlene dichloride), CAS # 75-09-2
  • 3.4 Chlorinated paraffins

4.0 1,1,1 – TRICHLOROETHANE (methyl chloroform), CAS# 71-55-6, 79-22-1, 22128-62-7

5.0 HEXAVALENT CHROMIUM COMPOUNDS – Including, but not limited to, metal cleaning
solutions, water treatment chemicals, cutting and grinding fluids, paints and refractories.

6.0 EPOXY OR POLYURETHANE RESIN SYSTEMS formulated with:

  • 6.1 4,4′- Methylene Dianiline (MDA, dianilinomethane), CAS# 101-77-9
  • 6.2 4,4′-Methylene BIS(2-Chloroaniline) (DACPM, MBOCA, MOCA), CAS# 101-14-4

7.0 FORMALDEHYDE (methanal, methyl aldehyde, methylene oxide), CAS# 50-00-0 Including,
but not limited to, cleaning products, process fluids, and refractory materials containing greater than
0.1% formaldehyde. In addition, this includes materials capable of releasing formaldehyde into the air
under any normal conditions of use at concentrations reaching or exceeding 0.1 ppm.

8.0 GLYCOL ETHERS (CELLOSOLVES) – Used in cleaning products, process fluids and paint

  • 8.1 2-Butoxyethanol (Butyl Cellosolve, Dowanol EB, EGBE, ethylene glycol monobutyl ether),
    CAS# 111-76-2
  • 8.2 2-Methoxyethanol (Methyl Cellosolve, EGME, ethylene glycol monomethyl ether, glycol
    monomethyl ether), CAS# 109-86-4
  • 8.3 2-Ethoxyethanol (Cellosolve, EGEE, ethylene glycol monoethyl ether), CAS# 110-80-5

9.0 LEAD (ORGANIC AND INORGANIC COMPOUNDS) – Including, but not limited to, paints,
lubricants, babbitt and solder. CAS# 7439-92-1

10.0 PETROLEUM-BASED PRODUCTS IDENTIFIED AS CARCINOGENIC – (reference
International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) monographs). Any petroleum-based product
supplied for the purpose of lubrication, rust prevention, or metal machining.

11.0 PROCESS FLUIDS CONTAINING A COMBINATION OF NITRITE AND AMINES – (for
example sodium nitrate with a triethanolamine salt or similar amine) which could combine to produce
nitrosamines. The presence of these functional groups may pass on genotoxic or carcinogenic activity
to the compound.

12.0 NITRILOTRIACETIC ACID (NTA) ,CAS # 139-13-9 and its TRISODIUM SALT,
NITRILOTRIACETIC ACID TRISODIUM MONOHYDRATE, CAS # 18662-53-8 – Used as a
chelating agent and detergent builder in cleaning products and water treatment chemicals.

13.0 PHENOL BASED BIOCIDES

14.0 MERCURY CONTAINING DEVICES – including but not limited to thermometers,
manometers, switches, and thermostats, electronic. Currently, the exceptions are batteries and lamps.

15.0 PETROLEUM-BASED SOLVENTS – purchased for cold degreasing application (i.e., partswashing tanks) shall have a flashpoint greater than 140º F (T.C.C.). These solvents shall not be
chlorinated and shall not contain more than 5% total aromatics by volume. Kerosene must not be
used as a parts cleaner.

16.0 TOLUENE, CAS #108-88-3 – must not be purchased in quantities exceeding 1 gallon.

17.0 METHANOL, CAS #67-56-1 – when used as a cleaning agent unless customer specifications
require use. Methanol used as a carbon source in heat treating or in etch operations is acceptable.
