Case Study: Timken Helps Saves $2.6 Million through Downtime Elimination

The Challenge

A Wyoming mining company sought to overcome ongoing maintenance challenges in its overland head pulleys. Non-standard undersized pulley shafts necessitated the need for thick cross-section adapter sleeves. This design did not allow for the necessary reduction in clearance (RIC) for its bearings, resulting in quarterly bearing rotation, subsequent annual replacement and, ultimately, costly downtime.

The Solution

The Timken engineering team identified its Timken® SAF Split-Block Housed Unit pillow block solution, providing adequate RIC without fundamentally altering the design of the application. The Timken solution provided five years of performance with no need for maintenance attention.
