Timken Multiplying Encoder ASIC

The Timken Multiplying Encoder ASIC, or MPS160, combines a direction-sensing Hall effect encoder with an integrated index pulse and a high accuracy resolution speed and position sensor system, all on one compact chip. The ASIC produces and processes Hall effect signals to create high-resolution quadrature output signals at speeds up to 250 k Hz/channel and offers a low power mode operation for lower speed applications.

The robust design operates reliably at higher temperatures, shock loads and vibration levels, and is more tolerant of sensor-to-target variations (up to 2mm air gap) than competing solutions. And, it's not as vulnerable to particulate, liquid or solid contaminates between the sensor and magnetic target.

The encoder ASIC offers flexibility for motor control circuitry in its ability to interface with external Hall sensors for commutation. When used with the external commutation Hall devices, it provides absolute position over SPI interface.

When used with special magnetized targets, a digital index signal is output by the chip and synchronized with the high resolution circuit signal.

As a multiplying encoder, the programmable output signal is up to 160 times the resolution of the pole pair count on the sensor’s multi-pole magnetic target. This creates the high decimal or binary resolution normally associated with optical encoders.
