Rolling

After being reheated to rolling temperature, the steel ingots pass between the grooved rolls and are reduced in size.  Large starting cross-section sizes provide improved grain structure in the finished steel product.

Our largest rolling mills, located at our Faircrest Plant, are called “reversing mills.” After passing through the mill in one direction, the ingot changes direction and passes through mill again. With each pass the size is reduced, moving the bloom closer to the final target dimensions.

At the Harrison Steel Plant, after the cast blooms have been reduced on one of the large mills, most of them are processed on our 10-stand inline horizontal/vertical (HV) mill.

After achieving the full reduction for the mill, the billets move to the next mill for further reduction, or are diverted to finishing operations prior to shipping to the customer.
