The steelmaking process begins with Timken raw material – recycled scrap metal. The scrap is delivered in special trucks to one of our two melt shops, either at the Harrison or Faircrest Steel Plants.
For each heat of steel, Timken selects the precise blend of scrap needed to achieve the desired final chemistry and properties.
Timken uses nearly 150 different classifications of scrap, each with specifications for chemistry and density.
In the melt shop, crane buckets are filled with the scrap blend. Lime is added to produce slag, and then the scrap is loaded into the top of one of our electric arc furnaces.
