Having a talented and well-trained pool of professionals is important to help Timken and local economies around the world thrive. That's why companies like Timken collaborate with educational institutions to foster the success of the next generation, as they complete high school and move on to college or whatever form of higher education will prepare them to ultimately join the workforce.
"Art of Engineering"
"Art of Engineering" is Timken's innovative approach to introduce students to engineering and the corresponding careers at Timken. It helps us explain creatively, through exploring the intersection of art and science, how innovation is important to developing the next generation of technologies. It also helps us get our own associates thinking in new and creative ways about our core disciplines, such as friction management and materials science.
Some examples of Art of Engineering in action are:
- Timken helped plan a career day for middle school students in Canton, Ohio. Timken engineers and local artists helped classes of seventh and eighth graders better understand engineering and arts professions by exploring the similarities and differences between them.
- Timken hosted an Art of Engineering competition for university students in China. Students created engineering-inspired artwork to compete for a cash prize and trip to Timken headquarters in the United States.
- Timken sponsored a traveling art exhibition, "From Monet To Picasso," featuring some of the Cleveland Museum of Art's most highly acclaimed European paintings and sculptures from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
In the Classroom
Timken volunteers visit classrooms, judge science fairs, host tables at career fairs and more to support students as they learn. Each year, through Junior Achievement, Timken associates help students of all grade levels learn about business concepts and careers through in-class activities and discussions about entrepreneurship, work readiness and financial literacy.
Timken associates also host local high school students at an annual "Engineer for a Day" program. The event includes working alongside Timken engineers, presentations on engineering careers and a hands-on engineering design competition.
In Canton, Ohio, Timken has supported an engineering Explorer Post for many years, encouraging local students to pursue careers in engineering.
Financial Support
In addition to volunteer support, Timken gives grants to selected higher educational programs. We support selected after-school programs that allow students to explore engineering concepts through design competitions. We also help students through selected summer programs that enrich their basic learning in subjects such as math and reading.
