Students from Canton, Ohio, area schools got an "artful" lesson in engineering by constructing sculptures of penguins, teddy bears and other characters out of geometric shapes. The creations began in students' math classes and came together in a colorful display at The Canton Museum of Art during the museum's Art in Engineering Day, co-sponsored by Timken.
Timken associates helped students explore connections between art and engineering – such as problem-solving, creativity and innovation – and cancel any impressions that engineering is only about math and science.
During Art in Engineering Day, Timken engineers led students in lessons and experiments in robotics, electricity, friction and materials – including designing "skimmers" out of cardboard, straws, foil, wax paper and paper clips, then gliding the air-propelled creations across tabletops.
This Canton Museum of Art event is one of many supported by Timken through its "Art of Engineering" initiative.
