Chromium stainless steels are iron-based alloys that contain at least
10.5 percent Cr. They achieve their stainless characteristics through the formation of the invisible and adherent chromium-rich oxide surface film. Other elements can be added to improve product characteristics. Stainless steels may be selected based on corrosion resistance, fabrication characteristics, availability and mechanical properties in specific temperature ranges.
