Silicon-Manganese Steels

Silicon increases the strength without a serious loss of ductility. It also adds scale resistance. These steels are generally heat treated to specific properties.

Manganese is one of the least expensive means of increasing hardenability at a given carbon content. It can also enhance machinability in the presence of sulfur.
