The new Timken EJ innovative cage design is piloted on the inner land to reduce roller load. In addition, the face of the cage extends above the roller centerline, increasing cage stiffness and reducing stresses in the cage under high shock loads or acceleration. The cage pockets incorporate a roller guidance function that guides the rollers into and out of the load zone. Since a central guide ring in not required, friction is reduced between the roller and the ring. This also creates space for a longer roller that can increase capacity. Lubrication flow is also improved with this unique design. EJ cages are heat-treated across the range with a nitriting process designed to reduce wear under increased loads and speed. This also produces extra high fatigue strength which can make this bearing ideal for harsh environments. Finally, the open face of the cage is slotted. This creates better oil lubrication flow and containment purging. This innovation enjoys less cage weight and less centrifugal forces.
